PLM Supports Tia Hamilton, owner of Urban Reads Bookstore!

Updated: 9 hours ago

Urban Reads Bookstore in Baltimore, owned by Tia Hamilton, has been subjected to a series of racist attacks and online harassment since February 20, 2025. The bookstore, which Ms. Hamilton established in 2019 to promote literacy and amplify voices affected by mass incarceration through her publication, State Vs Us Magazine, has become a target due to its focus on systemic racism and prison reform. The harassment escalated from online threats to disturbing images and direct intimidation. In addition to groups of motorcyclists driving by and circling her store, they have been spotted by Ms. Hamilton and her neighbors staked out in the cemetery across the street. They have also left hateful voicemails and texts with death threats and racial slurs. These actions have prompted Ms. Hamilton to seek assistance from community organizations.

In response to the threats, PLM has rallied in support of Ms. Hamilton and her bookstore. We remain dedicated to her physical and spiritual wellbeing and thank all Fatius who make regular phone calls, check-ins and who participated in the community engagement walk this past Saturday. Other local groups have mobilized to protect the store, with various organization members standing guard to ensure its safety. Baltimore City officials, such as Mayor Brandon Scott and Councilwoman Odette Ramos, have condemned the attacks and are treating the incidents as potential hate crimes. Despite the ongoing harassment, Ms. Hamilton remains steadfast in her mission to uplift the Black community and continue her advocacy for justice and education.

May the ancestors continue to bless and guide her existence.
